New Special Event Space for Madrid’s Landmark Westin Palace

Following the interior redesign of the hotel’s most prominent public spaces in 2012, including the renovation of the luminous rotunda lobby, this project transformed a total area of 1,185 m2 into a modern, flexible setting for special events. The 400 m2 circular ballroom, Espacio Palace, is an elegant double-height space with a theatrical, colonnaded upper gallery that can accommodate a wide range of private functions and technological needs, from business presentations to wedding receptions. Inspired by the landmark Neptune Fountain in front of The Westin Palace, the design plays with subtle references to a magical underwater world, adding a sense of movement to custom furniture, lighting, and carpeting. The perimeter curtain lining the walls can be illuminated in 256 different shades of color at the touch of an I-pad.

Soundproof partitions can subdivide another multi-functional space of a combined 585 m2 to accommodate a spectrum of events in a variety of configurations. Fabric panels in a soft beige tone cover select walls and columns and add warmth to the space. Vintage illuminated column capitals were chosen as a tribute to the famed “Palace Brasserie” that once drew visitors to this location. A designated monument in the cultural and financial center of Madrid, the historic Westin Palace Hotel was originally designed in the early 20th century by the distinguished Catalan architect Eduard Ferrés i Puig.
